Louise Jopling (1843-1933), self portrait, three quarter length depicting the artist painting herself from a reflection, behind an Oriental screen and various objects within the room, oil on canvas, 41cm x 51cm, signed and dated 1875 lower right, glazed and framed 69cm x 79cm.
Condition - in need of restoration, various losses to paint, canvas bumpy to top left corner and generally slack, however, appears free from any repairs, no holes nor tears.
More Information: Louise Jopling was a prominent Victorian female portrait painter, she studied in Paris with Charles Joshua Chaplin and worked from her Chelsea studio designed by William Burgess. Advocate of the women's rights suffragette movement and moved in social circles including Oscar Wilde, also associated with artists such as Sir John Millais and James Whistler.
